IPC: A boon for Poker in India


India Poker Championship (IPC) main event has started from the 29th of November to 6th of December this year at Casino Deltin Royale, Goa. This has been India’s most popular and the biggest poker tournament held every year.

IPC first started in March 2010 at Panjim, Goa. This event is organized by the casinos in Goa, and is generally held on the offshore cruises. This event is held many a times in the year, however the main event being held in the November – December tournament, where the winner of the auspicious main event is declared to be the Poker Champion for the season.

IPC initially started off as a quarterly event in 2010. It used to be held every quarter of the year. But from 2011 IPC started organizing the tournaments every alternative month, resulting into 6 tournaments a year. From then, this tournament has never looked back, and is growing with every passing season, with more and more numbers of footfalls at the tournament. The tourism revenue of Goa definitely benefits from IPC as during this time of the year, poker players from all around the country lands up in the state to try their hands and polish their skills.

The tournament introduced many interesting factors for the poker players in India. Apart from deciding upon the champion of the season, the IPC tournament also started the India Player of the Year (IPOY) ranking system since 2011. The IPOY grants certain points to the consistent players who play in the IPC events.  The winner of the India Player of the Year is awarded with a year-long sponsorship worth INR 200,000. The Indian Poker Champion is also awarded with a sponsorship package of 100,000.

The concept of IPC emerged out of two poker players, Peter Abraham and Sameer Rattonsey who designed this for all the Indian poker players, aiming to provide them with a world class poker experience. With the growing popularity of Poker in India, India Poker Championship has eventually managed to become one of the greatest tournaments held in Goa. Poker in India has been in the highlights for various reasons, and IPC makes another headline in the poker rag every two months.

This year’s annual main event, which is the 22nd edition of IPC, started yesterday at Goa and will continue till next Sunday, i.e., 6th of December. This year has a special catch at the poker room with a “Ladies Event” of 5K buy in, guaranteeing 1 Lac. There are seven more events scheduled for the whole week.
